Medium

« Back to Glossary Index

In the art market, Medium means the materials artists use to make artwork. This can be traditional stuff like oil paint, acrylics, or clay. Or, it can be digital files, light, sound, and video in modern fine art.

The choice of medium changes how an artwork looks, feels, and lasts. It also affects its value in the art market.

Think of a medium as the “what it’s made of” for a piece of art. Just like a chef picks ingredients, an artist carefully chooses their medium because it helps them tell their story or express their idea in a certain way. Using paint gives a different feel than sculpting with clay, and a video piece is a whole different experience from a traditional print. It’s all about how the materials bring the artist’s vision to life, and it’s something collectors often look at closely.
