In the world of photography, ISO is one of the “big three” settings (alongside aperture and shutter speed) that determine how bright your photos turn out. You can think of ISO as your camera sensor’s sensitivity to light. It’s a standard established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), hence the name.
Imagine you’re in a dimly lit room. To see clearly, your eyes need to become more sensitive to the available light. In a camera, increasing the ISO setting does something similar: it boosts the sensor’s ability to pick up light. Lower ISO numbers (like 100 or 200) mean less sensitivity, while higher numbers (like 800, 1600, or even 6400 and beyond) mean much greater sensitivity.
So, why would you change it?
- Bright Conditions: When there’s plenty of light (e.g., outdoors on a sunny day), you’ll typically use a low ISO (e.g., ISO 100 or 200). This is because low ISO settings produce the cleanest, smoothest images with the least amount of “noise.”
- Low Light Conditions: This is where high ISO comes in handy. If you’re shooting indoors without a flash, at night, or in any situation where light is scarce, increasing the ISO allows your camera to capture an image without needing a super-slow shutter speed (which can cause blur) or a very wide aperture (which might not give you enough depth of field).
- Freezing Action: Sometimes, even in decent light, you might need a very fast shutter speed to freeze a moving subject. If your photo is too dark with that fast shutter, bumping up the ISO can make it bright enough.
The trade-off for using a higher ISO is digital noise. This appears as graininess or speckles in your image, especially in darker areas. The higher the ISO, the more noticeable this noise becomes. Modern cameras are much better at handling high ISOs than older ones, but there’s always a balance to strike between a bright image and a clean one.
Mastering ISO is key to getting well-exposed, sharp photos in a wide range of lighting conditions, giving photographers a crucial tool for creative control.
